Geriatrician Care Guards Against Risk of Inappropriate Meds

FRIDAY, Jan. 25 (HealthDay News) -- Elderly Americans taking prescription medications face a lower risk for being given an inappropriate drug or dosage if they receive care from a geriatrician, new research reveals.

The finding is based on a large, national review of mostly male veterans who sought care at VA facilities across the United States.

The analysis indicates that roughly one in four vets were inappropriately prescribed medications, while those few who had visited with a geriatrician in the past year had reduced exposure to such critical mistakes.

"Geriatric care seems to help protect patients who are receiving prescription medications," said study author Mary Jo V. Pugh, a research health scientist with the South Texas Veterans Health Care System, and an assistant professor at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio.

The Go-Go's still got the beat

When the Go-Go's released "Beauty and the Beat" in 1981, they couldn't have predicted how successful, and influential, the album would become. On the strength of the hits "Our Lips Are Sealed" and "We Got the Beat," the Go-Go's became the first all-female band to top the Billboard charts, inspiring young women around the world to rock out themselves. The group went on to score the hit "Vacation," its video becoming an MTV sensation back when music videos still mattered.

Nearly 30 years later, the Go-Go's have still got the beat. Lead singer Belinda Carlisle — on her cell phone en route from Austin to Dallas — talks to us about posing for Playboy and how the band has stayed together all this time (with a few breakups in between). (Founding member Jane Wiedlin recently was forced to drop out of the tour because of her mother's failing health).

Fundraiser for nature-based kids program will feature noted musician

Kids and Creeks, a Chico nonprofit that works with schools to promote science education and watershed health, is hosting a fundraiser tonight at the El Rey Theatre.

The event is sold out, due in part by an appearance from singer-songwriter Brett Dennen, who was named one of Rolling Stone magazine's "10 Artists To Watch" in its November issue.

Kids and Creeks, which says it has provided more than 10,000 hours of community service and hosted field trips for more than 7,000 kids from 60 elementary school classes, ties its efforts into educational curriculum.

"Working with some of the standard base curriculum (schools) have to meet, we bring elementary-aged students into the field," Kids and Creeks President Mark Lynch said Friday. "We meet the requirements of the state standards for teaching by doing it experientially.
