Hot Stove: Wilkerson to Seattle

Apparently, the Mariners grew tired of waiting. Only days after the team was rumored to sign Brad Wilkerson contingent on them trading right fielder Adam Jones to the Orioles in the Erik Bedard deal, they decided to proceed regardless. Wilkerson hopped aboard, Jones or not, for a one-year, $3 million contract.

Whether this means there's hope the Bedard deal will be concluded in the next several days is unclear, but consider Wilkerson's addition a promising sign. Even if talks fall through, though, and Jones remains in Seattle, Wilkerson can provide adequate insurance against the team's somewhat questionable alternatives at designated hitter and/or first base.

Spirit Lake may vote on UND nickname Email this page Print this page

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) - Members of the Spirit Lake Nation likely will hold a referendum on whether to support University of North Dakota's Fighting Sioux nickname, the tribe's leader said, saying members are weary of constant talk about the issue.

''It's been something that's not as important as our health care or housing or everything we're faced with out here, but it's been popping up all the time, and I think we need to put it to rest here pretty quick,'' Tribal Chairman Myra Pearson said.

William Goetz, chancellor of North Dakota's university system, said Feb. 2 that a reservation vote may help speed a resolution of the nickname dispute.

''If a vote is taken, certainly it will be a major step, one way or the other, in terms of an event that will, I think, determine the outcome one way or the other,'' Goetz said.

SNP criticises Alexander’s month of ‘self-imposed silence’

Labour's Holyrood leader Wendy Alexander was accused yesterday of going on a month-long "self-imposed silence" since the Electoral Commission began investigating an illegal donation to her leadership campaign.

The SNP's Roseanna Cunningham said that by Friday a full month would have passed without the Labour leader giving any interviews or answering any questions.

Britney Spears

Spears was initially placed on a 72-hour hold, but this was upgraded to a 14-day stay over the weekend.

However, the troubled singer was discharged on Wednesday after a court representative decided she was sane enough to leave the facility.

According to People.com, Spears checked out of hospital against the advice of her doctor after she was given the all-clear from the court hearing referee -- usually a lawyer who has the power to overturn medics' decisions after an interview with the patient to determine if there is "just cause" for their detainment.

But sources claim the doctor who advised the singer was not her psychiatrist Dr. Deborah Nadel, but another attending medic.

Nadel has not been involved with Spears' hospitalization since issuing the 72-hour hold order last week, claims the unnamed source.
