Extreme Makeover contest offers a ''new you''

If you live in Clay County and are looking for the "new you," the Fleming Island Extreme Makeover contest may be just the ticket.

The idea is the brainchild of Kimber Newton, owner of the Fleming Island Tanning Salon, and brings a number of professionals together in an effort to help one person make long-lasting health and beauty changes.

"This is not just a pretty makeover for someone who just wants to get their hair and nails done," Newton said. "We want someone who is really looking to make lifestyle changes."

The makeover will take place over 30 days, starting April 1, Newton said. It will include five days a week of training at a gym, nutritional education, teeth whitening, hair styling and makeup, nails and tanning services. The winner will be driven in a limo to attend a coming-out party, outfitted in a dress and jewelry supplied by a boutique.

Brain Injury May Not Erase Long-Term Memory

TUESDAY, Feb. 5 (HealthDay News) A new interviewing technique has drawn out extensive details hidden in the long-term memories of people with memory impairment, U.S. researchers say.

There's ongoing debate about whether long-term memory is always dependent on a brain region called the medial temporal lobe, which contains the memory-processing center called the hippocampus.

We got a call from Jim Twite of Brewster this morning that the Cumberland Farms near Route 28 and Bank Street, AND the Harwich Gas at 435 Route 28, Harwichport next to the 400 Club, are both selling regular for $2.29.

The price is $2.32 on Rte 6 in Wareham, at both Lukoil and with the hippies... who now have a bedsheet hanging up in their office with "There Goes The Neighborhood " written on it. I love those people.

7-11 in Wareham, $2.32.... same with Exxon at the Buzzards Bay rotary.... ya know, the rotary that used to have the tugboat.

$2.51 at the Citgo near the Christmas Tree Shop in Sagamore.... $2.65 at the Citgo on 28 South in Bourne.... $2.64 at the Citgo on 28A, Bourne/Falmouth line, with $2.89 diesel for all you mothertruckers.

Anti-Nuclear Renaissance: A Powerful but Partial and Tentative Victory ...

As the presidential primary season heats up, an "anti-nuclear renaissance" against loan guarantees for new nuclear power plants will escalate, with the future of American energy policy and global warming hanging in the balance.

In the last days of 2007, grassroots activism ran up a stunning and improbably victory. But the triumph is both partial and tentative, and will be fiercely contested throughout 2008, with the basic direction of US energy policy hanging in the balance.

This latest chapter in the half-century saga of atomic energy began last summer, with an industry attempt to grab a blank taxpayer check for underwriting new reactor construction. The charge was been led by six-term Senator Pete Domenici (D-NM), atomic power's prime Congressional pusher.

Domenici inserted into the Senate version of the national Energy Bill a complex provision meant to allow the Department of Energy to underwrite up to 80% of new reactor construction costs.

Travels with Herb

Straight south today, from Tucumcari, New Mexico to Deming N.M. Very high country. For about the last 75 miles into Albuquerque, I was above 5000 feet elevation, and loosing power on the hills. Over nighted here, then west to Phoenix. I originally intended to meet friends and relatives here and stay a few days. After stopping for the night, I felt the pull of my children, grandchildren and even great-grandchildren in California.

I bailed out the next morning for Manteca, in the central valley of California.

I made Barstow for the night, back on route 66 via I-40. The rig, at 117,000 miles, was purring like a kitten. Gas prices in California are obscene. I drove on into Manteca the following day and spent Thanksgiving with the whole gaggle.

I'm Herb and I'm on a road trip.

Sorority promotes healthy, diverse lifestyle

Beauty, food and dancing are part of the focus of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc.'s annual Total Body Takeover week that kicks off today.

"AKA has always focused on promoting good and healthy practices among women," said Sade Jackson, public relations officer for AKA. "This year we still wanted to promote that but focus on some different events to involve everyone."

Today from noon to 2 p.m., AKA will pass out apples across from Starbucks in the Student Center to promote a healthy lifestyle and to educate people about various cultures and their health issues and practices.

"This week is simply about appreciating and educating ourselves and our peers about the beauty and complexity of other cultures," said Alise Marshall, president of AKA.

The sorority is tackling health and cultural awareness during this year's event, themed "The Color of One," Marshall said.
